How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT

When a customer asks ChatGPT who to hire, it names two or three businesses. Here is what it takes to be one of them.

How ChatGPT picks businesses

When ChatGPT searches the web to answer "who should I hire for plumbing in Austin?", it reads a handful of pages and builds its answer from them: review sites, directories, local articles, best-of lists and the businesses' own websites. It names the businesses that those pages describe clearly and consistently, and that other sources vouch for. Nobody outside OpenAI knows the exact weighting, and it changes. The steps below work because they make your business easy to find, easy to identify and easy to trust.

Seven steps

1. Check what ChatGPT says today

Before changing anything, ask ChatGPT the question your customers ask, in a fresh chat, and save the answer with the date. Note which businesses it names and which sites it cites. Those cited sites are where your next mentions should come from. How to check your business on ChatGPT.

2. Make your website say it in words

Each service and each area you serve needs its own page that says, in the first two sentences, what you do, where, and for whom. Put your name, address and phone number on every page as text. Make sure nothing blocks crawlers, including OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot.

3. Make your facts identical everywhere

Your business name, address, phone number, hours and categories should match on your site, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook and your industry's directories. Conflicting facts make an assistant doubt which business is which.

4. Keep real reviews coming

Ask every happy customer, every time, with a direct link. Reply to every review. Reviews that mention the service and the city help an assistant connect you to the question. Never buy or fake a review.

5. Get named on other sites

Local news, community sites, chambers of commerce, suppliers, partners, and the best-of lists ChatGPT already cites for your service and city. One honest mention on a site the assistant trusts is worth more than a dozen pages on your own site.

6. Publish things worth citing

Prices, timelines, before-and-after projects, answers to common questions. Specific, dated facts are what an assistant can quote.

7. Check every week

Ask the same question every week and keep the answers. Answers move. The goal is to stay named, week after week.

What does not work

  • Fake reviews and fake accounts. They break the law and the platforms' rules, and getting caught becomes the story about you.
  • Hidden text aimed at AI. It is treated as manipulation.
  • Anyone who promises a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT. Nobody controls the answer.
